ESPN’s Winter X Games 13 Adds Two New Disciplines Women’s Skiing Slopestyle and Snowmobile Best Trick Added to Line up;
 Live Coverage on ESPN and ABC Winter X Games 13, to be held January 22-25, 2009 in Aspen/Snowmass, Colo., and aired live on ESPN and ABC, will feature new events, a new superpipe and enhanced coverage across ESPN platforms. Two new disciplines will make their debut – Women’s Skiing Slopestyle and Snowmobile Best Trick. For the first time at Winter X Games, snowboarders and skiers will ride a 22-foot superpipe. Fifteen hours of live programming on ESPN and ABC will be offered as well as Winter X Games 13 coverage on ESPN International, EXPN.com, ESPN360.com, SportsCenter and ESPN2’s X Center. Women’s Skiing Slopestyle will feature the top eight skiers in the world competing on a variety of rails and jumps. Each skier will take two runs, and their best run will determine their final ranking. Snowmobile Best Trick will feature three athletes. Each athlete will take two jumps and will be judged by the fans in Aspen and those watching on television. The athlete who receives the most fan votes will take home the gold medal.

 

ESPN X Games Announces the First Wave of Athletes Invited to Winter X Games 13 Snowboard Phenomenon Shaun White among Athletes Invited to Compete in the World’s Premier Action Sports Event along with Tanner Hall, Lindsey Jacobellis, Tucker Hibbert, Gretchen Bleiler and Daron Rahlves Shaun White leads the list of athletes invited to compete at ESPN’s Winter X Games 13, to be held for its eighth consecutive year at Buttermilk Mountain in Aspen/Snowmass, Colo., January 22-25, 2009. The event will air live on ESPN and ABC. The 13th annual winter action sports competition will feature more than 160 men and women from across the globe competing for medals and prize money in the following sports: Skiing, Snowboard and Snowmobile. • Shaun White: Seven-time Snowboard Winter X Games gold medalist and 2006 Winter Olympic gold medalist
• Gretchen Bleiler: Three-time Winter X Games Snowboard SuperPipe gold medalist and 2006 Winter Olympic silver medalist
• Tanner Hall: Defending Skiing SuperPipe champion and seven-time Winter X Games gold medalist
• Tucker Hibbert: Three-time Winter X Games Snowmobile SnoCross gold medalist
• Kees-Jan van de Klooster: Winter X Games 12 Mono Skier X gold medalist
• Lindsey Jacobellis: Four-time Winter X Games Snowboarder X gold medalist and 2006 Winter Olympic silver medalist
• Travis Rice: Three-time Winter X Games snowboard medalist
• Sarah Burke: Two-time Winter X Games and defending Skiing SuperPipe gold medalist
• Daron Rahlves: Winter X Games 12 Skier X gold medalist and widely considered as the most accomplished speed skier in American history with 28 World Cup podiums and three World Championship podiums over the course of the last decade
All athletes receiving invitations to compete at Winter X Games 13 are chosen by a sport-specific selection committee. Criteria and timing of invitations varies by sport and discipline as it is based on the state and event schedules of that particular sport. The only exception is each gold medalist from Winter X Games 12 (2008) receives an automatic invitation to compete.
ESPN and ABC will televise 15 hours of live high-definition programming January 22 – January 25. ESPN2 will present daily late-night highlight programs in HD January 22 – January 25, an additional eight hours of coverage. Additionally, the Winter X Games will also be televised on ESPN’s International networks to 122 countries and territories in Latin America, the Pacific Rim, Middle East, Asia, Africa, Israel, and Canada.

DETAILS: The Winter X Games, the premier winter action sports event in the world, will be held January 22-25, 2009 from Aspen/Snowmass, Colorado. The annual event features athletes from across the globe competing for medals and prize money in the following sports: Skiing, Snowboard and Snowmobile. January 20-21 will serve as practice and elimination days. All Winter X Games competitions will take place at the resort's Buttermilk Mountain. Winter X Games 13 will air live on ESPN and ABC and will feature nighttime events. The event will remain at Aspen/Snowmass through 2010, for a total of nine consecutive years (2002-2010).

Winter X Games 12 Results
Winter X Games 12 was ESPN's most-watched in history The eight telecasts averaged 863,000 homes, up 17% from 2007. Many key demo groups (Men and Persons 18-24, 18-34, 18-49, and 25-54) also delivered their most-viewed Winter X Games, all up double-digits across the board from Winter X Games 11. Of the eight Winter X Games 12 telecasts, six were among the top ten most-viewed in Winter X history, including the final night and most-viewed Winter X telecast ever — Sunday night (1,117,000 HHs, based on a 1.2 rating). ABC's Winter X Games 12 telecast on Saturday afternoon delivered a 1.3 household rating and 1,424,000 HHs, up 9% and 10% respectively from Winter X Games 11. Overall, ABC was up across the board among all people and male demos, with Men 18+ up 29% from last year.
